Overated Magazine

August 14th 2002

Paul: Hey, what are your girl's names by the way?
Jill: I'm Jill
Carolyn: And I'm Carolyn
Paul: I'm Billy and that's Paul
Jill: I don't think so, nice try Paul.
Paul: They know who we are!
Billy: Hey, Overated Magazine? I've heard of this before! I think I've gone to your website.
Jill: [taken by surprise] Yeah, because...yeah.
Carolyn: Yeah, a year ago we were just getting started.
Jill: Yeah, we started this because of your band basically.
Billy: Awe cool, really? That's awesome!
Carolyn: Yeah, we first met on the message board.
Billy: Awe. Is that the one when you first go to the webpage there's like cds on it and a collage of bands.. and like converse sneakers?
Jill/Carolyn: Yeah, that was the old one.
Jill: We just got a new layout
Billy: Well, I've seen the old one
Jill: Well we just got a .com too, I'll give you a card when we're done here.
Billy: Alright, we'll check it out!
Paul: Did you guys buy yourselves a .com?
Jill: No, actually our webmaster's dad did.
Paul: Awesome
Billy: Ever better right?
Jill: Hell yeah.

Since we already know who you are and what you play, What's one random fact about yourselves?
Billy: Paul likes Hot fudge sundaes. Now what's a random fact about me?
Paul: Billy's a little under the weather right now.
Billy: Wow, that was definately random. Most people wouldn't know that since it hasn't left the bus until right now.

What direction to you guys see yourselves going musically?
Paul: East
Jill: East? Ok.
Billy: Hopefully when you hear this next record you will see what direction we're going musically. It's definately different then the last record. I think that um, no offense to any bands or anything but we get pegged as a pop-punk band like all the time. Which is ok because there's a lot of really good pop-punk bands but I think and everyone in the rest of the band thinks that we're a rock band. There's people in our band that really like punk......
Paul: Hardcore
Jill: Hardcore Acoustic?
Paul: Hmm yeah.
Billy: Yeah, Hardcore Acoustic. No, I just think that we're a rock band
Paul: We're a hardcore band that's just really well-produced.
Jill: Wow, amazing!
Paul: No, No, No. On this album when you hear it, I think we're going to leave that catagory of being catagorized as a pop-punk band. What we're also going to try and do, well we don't know yet, but we're going to try and stray from doing straight up pop-punk tours. We're going to try to mix it up.
Billy: And that's ok I mean we're probably going to do plenty of pop-punk tours because there's bands that we've been touring with for the last three years that we really enjoy playing with.
Paul: Yeah, we're friends with them.
Billy: We really like their music but at the same time I think that we're a rock band that goes in different directions. Sometimes we might sound like a pop-punk band but a lot of times we'll have drum roots and stuff that are sort of hip-hoppy or quiet ballads..............
Paul: You know on the first......Oh, sorry to interrupt.
Billy: Yeah, your good at that today.
Paul: I am. On the first album how each song was different but the whole cd sounded the same, this time each song is completely different and each song sounds completely different.
Jill: Yeah, from what I've heard off the album things are sounding really great.
Paul: Yeah, I don't know we definately learned more about our instruments and about sounds and how to record.

How do you guys feel about the new album being leaked out to the internet?
Paul: It hasn't been.
Billy: How much as been leaked out so far?
Jill: About 4 or 5 tracks.
Paul/Billy: Right? Billy: Wow um.. I mean there's nothing we can really do about it. No, I don't want it to get leaked out. Once it's out I don't care if it's on the internet you know. I want the anticipation you know.. for when October 1st hits. I want everyone to go out and get the record like on that first day.
Jill: Yeah, I think we're all pretty much ready for it.
Billy: Well, there's a couple songs that are on the internet for like a purpose because we kind of did it on purpose. Songs like "The Anthem" we put on the 'Positive Youth Foundation CD' and....
Paul: Well, what else is on the internet?
Billy: Then like "Lifestyles....." you can go on the Epic website and download that. There's some acoustic versions that are definately out.
Paul: Oh yeah
Billy: As far as like the full album I don't think that it's going to make it out before. Which is ok. I really want the anticipation of October 1st for everyone to just get it on the same day and be really excited. But whatever.
Jill: Yeah, there's a couple people here and there on the message board that are like "Oh, I got the WHOLE album!" and I'm sitting there like "No you don't dude."
Billy: The problem is that all the promos we made are copy protected and if you put it in your computer it won't even play. If they get it through their computer some how it's going to take a lot of work and I'm not sure how they would do it. I mean yeah you could put it in your CD player and hold a microphone up to your CD player and have this really crappy sounding recording. As far as getting the whole album out, hopefully it's not going to happen.

What are you up to Paul? Billy has 'Level 27' and the twins have 'All Things Rock' so what are you doing?
Paul: Playing bass
Jill: Just playing bass.....
Billy: Paul's really good at bass. I think the problem is that we're not really good at playing guitar so we need other things to occupy us.
Jill: Aww, I can assure you I'm worse.
Billy: Huh?
Jill: I play guitar and well I suck at it.
Paul: I honestly. I haven't really thought of it. I'm definately not going to do a clothing company because I don't know shit about fashion. I feel like I haven't really had time to start any of the side projects that I want to do. So I don't have much to do right now besides the band. So in a few years, I think you'll see some stuff from me.
Jill: I think the both of you should do a Comedy/Skit show.
Billy: Well, I don't know how funny that would be.
Jill: Awe, come on!
Paul: Well I don't know. I improv pretty well.
Billy: Alright, we'll give it a try maybe.
Jill: Yes!
Paul: Are we funny or something?
Jill: Somewhat
Billy: [laughing] Somewhat?
Paul: Funny looking?
Jill: No!

Why do people come to your shows? What do you think sets your band apart from everyone else?
Billy: I can't tell you what sets us apart from everyone else, but I think that in a world where your popularity in the mainstream is based upon how many times your song is played on the radio and how many times you're on MTV or how many times you're in a magazine you know. We don't really get that much stuff. I think that the good thing about Good Charlotte though is "Oh when's the next time Good Charlotte's gonna come to town?" not oh, when's the next time our song's going to come on the radio, ya know? I think that pretty much the whole focus around our band for us at least for us is that we're not going to get on the radio and we're not going to be in the magazines and stuff right away. We my as well just have the best live show as we can possibly have. That is probably the one thing that we try really, really hard to do. Hopefully kids come to our shows and go "Wow, they're really good" and they tell their friends. Hopefully it all happens by word of mouth from our live show.
Paul: We're at the point in our carrer... Well, not now that the twins have the show but.. before that we were pretty underground you know. We didn't really have too much.
Billy: It definately helps now.
Jill: Yeah, your message board.. since the show has started.. I think it's went up about 10,000 members.
Paul: Wow........
Carolyn: Yeah, it's really high now.
Billy: It's nice. I mean they don't really play us on MTV but the twins say our name on MTVa lot and our name is on MTV a lot which is good. As far as people hearing our music it's still probably about the same as it was before.
Paul: Yeah, those people might have just heard "Little Things."
Billy: Right. People might have gone out to buy the CD because they're interested because they keep hearing the name Good Charlotte on TV and they want to find out what it's about. As far as just hearing the music? It's not any different as it was before.

If you could go back and change anything on your previous album what would you change and why?
Billy: I wouldn't change anything because an album is kind of like a growing experience that's why you make more then one record. If you only made one record you'd want to go back and change it everytime but when you go to make the next record that's when you change.
Paul: Yeah exactly. That's what I was gonna say. It's also like that record met a lot to us at that time of our lives with what was going on.
Billy: Plus, We were little kids then. I was still in highschool and Paul was only like 19 or something.
Paul: Yeah, It sounds like we were kids.
Billy: Right, We were really young and making a really simple rock record. It was cool but this record seems to us like a band that's been doing it for a long time.
Paul: Now we can all drink and public and stuff....
Jill: haha! Good 'ol Paul.

What are some useless talents you guys have that have nothing to do with your music?
Paul: [bends his fingers back as far as they can go]
Jill: Ah, I can do better then that.
Paul: What about those eyebrows?
Jill: Watch this..... [rotates shoulder blades/arms 360 degrees from front to back]
Billy: Wow!!! That's good!
Paul: Ahhhhh ow.
Jill: Told ya.
Paul: I would incorporate that into my music. I would do that on stage some how. Teach me!
Billy: I can bend just my top knockles
Carolyn: [shows Billy that she can do the same]
Billy: Wow, you can do that to?
Carolyn: Yeah, that's about all I can do.
Billy: I thought that was kind of hard when I was a little kid. That's about all I can do. I'm sorry.
Paul: I can do a backflip!
Jill: Wow, amazing.

Describe yourself in 5 words or less.
Paul: Like 5 words in a sentence or 5 different words?
Jill: Any way you want.
Billy: Ok I'll do this for Paul. Spurr of the moment, witty, forgetful, charming, goofy, and talented.
Jill: [laughing] That's not Paul!
Billy: Yeah it is! You don't like him being talented?
Jill: Aw no. Paul rules. I was being sarcastic.
Billy: Oh, Ok.
Paul: So far forgetful is definately the most accurate. Um, [girly voice] Billy.. sensitive. [normal voice] Billy is the kindest person you'll ever meet.
Jill: Awe!
Carolyn: That was sweet!
Billy: [counting on his fingers] Kindest person you'll ever meet. You did it dude! 5 words! Nice!
Paul: Thanks!

What's the biggest sacrafice you guys have ever made to be a part of this band?
Billy: Having like a real home. Having a place to go to everyday besides a bus. I'd say I love every single part of this job 100% except.....
Paul: There's definately some bad things that come a long with it. Like trying to have a realationship with a girl is really, really hard when you're not there everyday.
Billy: That's true. That's really hard.
Paul: Also, just picking up and leaving your home when you've been there for like 19 years.
Billy: And doing some normal things like going to the mall...
Jill: Yeah, but I'm sure you two can still go to the mall, without people noticing you though?
Billy: Yeah we can still go to the mall if we have time. At home not at other places yeah.
Paul: Yeah! I can get away with it anywhere. I was talking to this girl last night at Applebee's after the show and we were sitting there just talking. She was asking me about the Warped Tour because I was wearing a Used tee-shirt. She's like "So, did you go today?" and I'm like "Yeah, Yeah" and we were sitting there talking for like 10 minutes and then she's like "So, are you with the Warped Tour" and I was like "Yeah" and "Oh, who are you with?" and I'm like "Good Charlotte." Then she goes "Oh my god! You are? I am so dumb! I got your autograph today!"
Jill: Ouch, that's hilarious!
Paul: Yeah, she got my autograph and still didn't regonize me.
Jill: Oh man.
Paul: Yeah that's awesome. I think it's great. I don't want to no be able to walk anywhere...
Carolyn: Yeah, that would suck.

If you were making the soundtrack to your life, what are 3 songs that you feel would best describe it?
Carolyn: We have extremely random questions.
Jill: Yeah, we do.
Billy: Songs that would describe my life.... Ah, I don't know. That's a deep one. Definately like.. I guess one of the songs would probably be....'Tomorrow" by Silverchair because that's like my favorite band in the world. When I first heard that song I found out that they were like 15 and I was just 14 at the time or something. I was like "Man, if they can do this.. I really wanna do this." I mean they are like my reason for getting a guitar and joining a band.
Jill: Have you met them yet?
Billy: [smiles] Yeah! That's probably like the one song that describes my reasoning for what I do the most right now. As far as like my personal life I can't even really think of anything. Musically that song is pretty big for me.
Paul: I don't think I can answer that question either. It's just too hard.

What were you like as kids?

Billy: Kids or highschool?
Jill: Like little tykes...
Billy: I use to just watch cartoons. Sit in front of the tv and watch cartoons with a piece of paper and a pencil. I would draw every cartoon character. I wanted to work for Disney really bad and be an animator. I'd sit around and draw all day long. I never really went out and played in the woods with a bunch of snakes under rocks. I was scared of snakes. I was pretty little so I would just sit around and draw. That's all I really did. I listened to "It's not easy being green" by Kermit on a record player in my headphones every single day. That was big on my list.
Paul: I'd go out into the woods and build forts with my friends and play with the bugs and light them on fire.
Billy: Aw girls, I'm sorry we gotta get going to the next one.
Jill/Carolyn: Alright

Shout-Outs?
Paul: Hey, this is Paul from Good Charlotte and I scream. And I love my mom..... And Billy... but mainly my mom.... and my dad too.
Billy: Hey, this is Billy from Good Charlotte and I'm shouting out to Overated Magazine because I am yeah.
Paul: Aw thanks girls
Jill/Carolyn: Thanks guys
